Rossmoor’s Firewise Committee will host a wildfire education event featuring UC Berkeley professor emeritus Joe McBride. As the first installment in the committee’s Speakers Series, the program aims to inform residents about wildfire risks and their broader impacts.
The program will feature a detailed look at Rossmoor’s current botanical makeup, the history of the region, and how its plant communities developed over time, along with an examination of how susceptible specific plants are to wildfire risk, followed by a Q&A session.
McBride will discuss the area’s major plant communities—including grasslands, shrub fields, oak woodlands, eucalyptus, Monterey pines, and redwoods—exploring why they occur where they do, how they respond to wildfires, and what that means for local fire prevention efforts.
